Gunghi Creek, NWT

Lab

June 2022

Our first field trip after a long time not travelling! The project site is located at km 131.2 of the ITH, about 14km south of Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. At this location, there is a newly constructed bridge crossing Gunghi Creek, replacing the culvert that was originally constructed. The bridge may be susceptible to movement as a result of changes to the underlying permafrost’s thermal regime. To further understand and monitor the factors affecting changes in permafrost, the team installed a climate monitoring station. This will help inform future construction and maintenance along the highway to maintain a reliable transportation link from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk.
